A Short History of Computer Science at UVa-Wise

early to mid 70's

Offered a few programming classes, like BASIC and FORTRAN.

Courses were taught by mathematics and science faculty.

Technology was a remote job entry station and ASCII terminals accessing mainframes at VA Tech and UVA.

late 70's

College hired first computer science faculty.

Increased course offerings with courses like Operations Research, Systems Analysis, Assembly Language, and COBOL,

The Math Department began offering a minor in Computer Science.

College purchased first computer system.

early 80's

Business department began offering a business degree with a concentration in data processing.

College added second computer science faculty position.

late 80's

College began offering major in Computer Information Systems.

Business department retired data processing concentration.

the 90's into the 2000's

CIS slowly begins to look more and more like CS.

mid 2000's

Added third CS faculty position

CIS officially changed to CS.

MIS degree program introduced. MIS is a combination of business, communications, and computer science.

Software Engineering program introduced. See SE-Status.
