Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Our Mission

The Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics promotes mathematics and mathematics education to the teachers in Southwest Virginia from kindergarten level to the college level through an annual conference that is conducted by the Council. Our conferences present opportunities for teachers to learn new developments in mathematics and mathematics education, the opportunity to learn new methods and skills, and the opportunity to see how mathematics education flows from the kindergarten level to the college level.

Our History

The Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics was formed in 1975 by a group of public school teachers and college teachers in Southwest Virginia. Until Fall 1999, an annual fall conference was held on the campus of Emory and Henry College, usually on the fourth Saturday in September. And an annual spring conference was held on the campus of the University of Virginia's College at Wise, formerly Clinch Valley College, on a Saturday in late March or early April. Beginning in the Fall of 1999, the Council has held one conference annually at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia on the second Saturday of September.

The Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics is an Affiliated Group of the National Council of Mathematics and the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. We would also like to thank UVA-Wise and Emory & Henry College for their support.
